If you want a car that just randomly slams on, buy a mercedes. I love how a cholo who drives a honda civic slams a car company at the edge of technolodgy. At the end of the day, the reason this tech exists is because car companies push boudaries, a bit like your cousin jumping a wall and doging ice. Bmw, Mercedes & Tesla. They are all making an effort. If you want that be a cholo and buy a civic, I heard there's still some spoon engines knocking about if you speak to Hector

This is why Aviation doesn’t rely on just one type of technology/principle for sensor input. For example, the altimeter has an input from the air data computer and another from the radio altimeter. In that case, a failure in the air data computer won’t render the radio altimeter useless and viceversa.

cameras are obviously always going to be needed, with lots of machine learning one it. LIDAR only tells shape and distance. It can't tell which light is lit, only that a set of lights is there. It can't read signs, it can only tell that a flat object at the side of the road exists. It can't even see lane lines, because, well, the road is flat, and that's all the LIDAR can say. Cameras will 100% be needed for self-driving, and most of the processing will always be done on what the cameras see. LIDAR can probably help, the only question is how much does it help, and how much (extra) work does it take the software to combine the two, vs just spending that extra processing power on camera data.

Adding to the video, there is still machine learning involved on lidar data, there is research to segment objects directly in the 3D point cloud to boost environment understanding Also there is gps data, currently cars can't drive themselves outside of known areas, cars that use lidar rely on the gps data to cross reference where they are and which decision to take relying less on the images and points they see and more on the street map they have, also having an operator in the central control room to help on cases where the model doesn't know how to resolve a situation

no car will ever be level 5 autonomous before every car is level 5 autonomous. i am a train driver and we have level 2 autonomy. level 3 is currently being developed. level 5 isn't about lasers and distance detection, it's about all cars having 1 system coordinating them. this will not happen for another like 10 years. no way. trains will have level 5 first as it's way easier to coordinate trains on traintracks than cars on streets. and another thing: there will probably never be level 5 because no manufacturer will guarantee a 100% safe ride so some human will still need to be responsible for driving a car. and they need someone to shet on if there is a crash. a car company would never take a blame for a crash.

The explaining images were of co-focal axial cameras. Why is that? Stereo imaging is still all about the focal axle difference. Eight cams distributed on the outskirts of the frame could make a big difference in identifying an object and wether it is moving or not. If the mounts of current cams were on the A-pilars, there would probably be enough width to distinctively differ the data from one another sensor compared to the sum-chanel.

Just took delivery of a new M3 last week and that means it’s vision only. There is a crazy amount of phantom braking that I did not experience on the 2020 M3 driving FSD on the same roads. When it works its beautiful and it changes lanes to overtake slow cars, takes interchanges on its own, it’s great… when it works. I did notice that at stop lights it sees the light as green and shows a green line on the ground indicating it should go and it knows but unless there is a car in front leading then it tries to stop anyway and makes me give it juice and confirm it should go. Odd because it’s like it knows but doesn’t trust itself. Again, any car in front and it blows right through as expected.
